What UPC-A encodes
UPC-A is the standard retail barcode across the United States and Canada — the format printed on nearly every packaged product sold in North American stores. It encodes a 12-digit GTIN (Global Trade Item Number, specifically a GTIN-12): a number system digit, a 5-digit manufacturer code, a 5-digit product code, and a check digit. Enter the first 11 digits here and this generator computes the 12th (check digit) for you automatically — no need to work it out by hand.
Digit structure and the number system digit
The first digit of a UPC-A number is the number system digit, and it tells a scanner what kind of product the code represents: 0 and 1 cover most standard retail items, 2 is reserved for random-weight items like meat or produce (priced by weight rather than a fixed unit price), 3 is for drug and health-related products (National Drug Code), 4 is used for in-store item marking by individual retailers, and 5 is reserved for coupons.
Manufacturer and product codes
After that come a 5-digit manufacturer code (assigned by GS1 US) and a 5-digit product code the manufacturer assigns to each item, followed by the check digit. That structure is what lets a scanner and point-of-sale system uniquely identify both the maker and the specific product from a single scan.
The check digit
UPC-A uses the same mod-10 check-digit algorithm as EAN-13: starting from the digit next to the check digit and moving left, digits alternate weights of 3 and 1. Multiply, sum, and the check digit is whatever value rounds the total up to the next multiple of 10. This generator does that math for you — just enter the first 11 digits.
UPC-A and EAN-13
UPC-A is effectively a subset of EAN-13: every UPC-A number becomes a valid EAN-13 by adding a leading zero, and EAN-13 scanners read UPC-A barcodes natively for exactly that reason. The reverse isn't always true — a full 13-digit EAN-13 number with a non-zero first digit isn't a valid UPC-A code. If you're selling internationally rather than only in the US or Canada, EAN-13 is the more broadly compatible format. There's also UPC-E, a zero-suppressed 6-digit variant of UPC-A meant for small packages where a full-size barcode wouldn't fit — it encodes the same underlying number system and check digit, just compressed, and a UPC-E scan expands back out to the equivalent UPC-A number.
Sizing and printing guidance
UPC-A shares GS1's general EAN/UPC size specification: a nominal size of 37.29 × 25.93 mm at 100% magnification, with an acceptable range from 80% to 200% of that. Shrinking it further makes the bars too fine for many scanners, especially under real-world store lighting rather than a lab bench.
Quiet zone
The quiet zone — the clear, unprinted margin flanking the bars — needs to be at least 9 times the x-dimension (narrow bar width) on each side. That's a simpler, symmetric rule than EAN-13's 11x/7x margins, so don't assume the same layout works for both without checking.
Printing guidance
Print at 300 dpi minimum for anything that needs to scan at a real checkout, never scale below 80% magnification, and use pure black bars on a white or light background — low-contrast printing is one of the most common causes of a UPC-A barcode failing to scan even when it looks correct on screen.
